It was the culmination of many things I think. He had a lot of missed opportunities, most notably being spun by Verstappen in China, failing to overtake Ricciardo in Monaco (not sure if it was even possible) and botching an overtake on Bottas on the final lap. Those were a lot of points lost in the begining of the season when Ferrari was the strongest team and it could have weighed on his head in combination with the Hockenheimring crash03-01-2021 22:51

If the car is perfect for Vettel he shines, if it isn't he struggles. I wonder if the thinner tread tires introduced in some 2018 races have anything to do with it. But obviously the 2018 Hockenhein crash was a big hit in his confidence.03-01-2021 22:44

Having a clear number two certainly puts less strain on the team. You make all the important calls that might need to be made in the race before you reach the track, safety car priorities, preferable strategy and what not. A good number two gets the rest. They will get the unlikely strategy that might get you on top, or might ruin your race. Red Bull fully trusts Verstappen to fulfill the first role and they certainly do not want a repeat of Vettel/Webber, so that should be their attitude at the begining. If Perez shows he can brawl with Verstappen then yes, you will have a Vettel/Leclerc scenario.29-12-2020 14:24

That's the extreme case. Two evenly matched drivers can give more to a team than a number one and two. The problem is, especially at the top of the field relationships can sour quickly because when you are leading you are not going to yield to your teammate for the team's advantage. So it's better to make it clear before they hit the track who has priority in such conditions, in Red Bull's case unless Perez pulls something magnificent out of his hat it will most certainly be Max at the front, with Perez closely behind to salvage any points Mac loses31-12-2020 12:39

They obviously need a clear number one. The only team this year that didn't seem to have that was McLaren, but I doubt that attitude will stick around if they move further up the field.
